Making Friends In Unlikely Places

Yesterday I sat with my kids in big church listening to the Justin Wren sermon. Despite the fact that they were playing with wiki stix the whole time they were definitely listening. And, as you can imagine they had a lot of questions. So we talked a lot about how different people live. We also talked about what we can do once school starts and maybe there are new kids in our class.

It’s great when life gives you these opportunities and opens natural discussion. And on Friday this week I hope they bring it up again after our Bible reading. They’ve been curious what it means to be like Jesus. They think it’s too hard. But between the last sermon and our reading (specifically on Friday) I hope they can understand at least one part. Jesus tried to be a friend to people who other people wouldn’t be friends with.  How can we be friendly towards someone who is excluded?

Mon. July 22: Luke 4:14-30

Today’s Takeaways:

  • Jesus went to his hometown Nazareth and preached in the synagogue, but people in his hometown didn’t see him as a prophet or the son of God. They saw him as the son of Joseph.
  • His neighbors and friends got so upset about how Jesus described himself that they tried to throw him off a cliff.

Today’s Talking Topic:

  • Is there anything about church that you don’t like? Or anything about the gospel stories we’ve been reading this year that makes you mad or seems unfair?  Talk about it and then pray and ask God for help understanding.

Tues. July 23: Luke 4:31-44

Today’s Takeaways:

  • Jesus healed the sick and cast out demons and because of this he became very famous.

Today’s Talking Topic:

  • No matter how busy Jesus was, he would have alone time with God. Do you talk to God or pray every day?  Think of how you can find alone time every day with God, just like Jesus did.

Weds. July 24: Luke 5:1-11

Today’s Takeaways:

  • Jesus found fisherman on the Sea of Gallilee to be his first disciples. In Mark, it just says that Jesus said “follow me” and they followed.  Luke gives a little more detail – Jesus amazed them with a fishing miracle before he called them.

Today’s Talking Topic:

  • How do you think you would react if Jesus performed an amazing miracle in front of you?

Thurs. July 25: Luke 5:12-26

Today’s Takeaways:

  • Jesus healed the paralyzed man to prove that he was truly capable of forgiving sins. By visibly showing he had the power to heal the man’s body, he proved that he could also heal sins.

Today’s Talking Topic:

  • Don’t you think the paralyzed man’s friends were so awesome? They carried him around town and even climbed onto a roof to get him to Jesus.  Do you have any friends that you would do anything for?

Fri. July 26: Luke 5:27-39

Today’s Takeaways:

  • Jesus worked with and was friends with people who others thought were the wrong kind of people.
  • Jesus cared about God’s rules, but he understood that following God’s spirit was more important than the strict rule if the two didn’t line up.

Today’s Talking Topic:

  • Jesus tried to be a friend to people who other people wouldn’t be friends with. How can you be friendly towards someone who is excluded?
